Ann Gordon Atherton, 92, formerly of Lexington and Maysville, Ky., died Saturday, December 2, 2023 at Shawnee Estates Senior Living, in Xenia, Ohio. She was the daughter of the late Irvin and Ella Morgan Collins of Maysville. Mrs. Atherton was born December 30, 1930 in Maysville and was a 1948 graduate of Maysville High School. Following high school, she graduated from Spencerian College in Louisville, Ky, and spent the majority of her career working for the Fayette County Board of Education in Lexington, Ky.
Ann married Clarence (June) Atherton, Jr on February 4, 1956 and they were married 49 years until his death in 2005. Mrs. Atherton supported her husband's ministry as together they served many churches throughout the United Methodist Church Kentucky Conference. Following their retirement, they returned to Maysville and their home church, Central United Methodist Church.
She is survived by two sons: Mark (Sue) Atherton of Xenia, Ohio, and Dan Atherton of Raleigh, NC. In addition, Mrs. Atherton was blessed to have five grandchildren: Evan (Audrey) Atherton and Taylor Atherton, of Raleigh, NC, Lauren Atherton of St. Louis, MO, and their mother Vicky Brewer also of Cary, NC, and Christopher Atherton and Levi Atherton of Xenia, Ohio. Also surviving are several nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her one sister, Mary Ethel Pyles.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, December 9 at 10:00 a.m. at Knox and Brothers Funeral Home in Maysville. Funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. Internment will follow in the Maysville Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Gideons International. Condolences at knoxbrothersfuneralhome.com
