Obituary

Helen F. Poe, 94, of Mount Airy, Maryland, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, at Spring Arbor in Frederick, Maryland.

Born on July 27, 1932, Helen was the only child of the late Larry and Marie Seaman. She was raised in Louisville, Kentucky, where she developed a love for sports and was actively involved in her church’s youth group. She also enjoyed painting and reading books about history. Helen attended the University of Kentucky, where she met the love of her life, William (Bill) Roy Poe. The couple married on January 27, 1951, beginning a loving partnership that spanned nearly five decades until Bill’s passing in March 1999.

Helen and Bill began raising their family in Louisville, Kentucky, before spending several years in Beverly, Massachusetts. They eventually settled in Potomac, Maryland, where they raised their family and made many lasting memories. Following Bill’s retirement, the couple returned to Kentucky, making their home in Maysville. After Bill’s passing, Helen moved to Mount Airy, Maryland, to be closer to family.

Helen became an active and familiar face in the Mount Airy community, enjoying town hall meetings and never hesitating to pick up the phone and call the mayor when she had something on her mind. She was never shy about sharing her opinion, a quality her family will always remember with a smile. Helen also loved hosting Kentucky Derby parties, bringing family and friends together to celebrate a tradition close to her heart. Above all, she cherished spending time with those she loved.

Helen was the proud mother of three children and was blessed with nine grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. Her family was a source of great joy throughout her life.

She is survived by her three children: Wm. Larry Poe (Sally) of Catlett, Virginia; Beverly Poe Rundell (the late Lyle) of Rockville, Maryland; and David B. Poe (Michelle) of Leland, North Carolina. She is also survived by her nine grandchildren: Jason Rundell, David Poe, Matthew Rundell, Jonathan Poe, Jeremy Poe, Billy Rundell, Nathan Poe, Megan Rice, and Jimmy Poe; 29 great-grandchildren; her brother-in-law, Wayne D. Poe of Maysville, Kentucky; and many other cherished family members and friends.

Helen will be lovingly remembered for her devotion to family and friends, her pride in her Kentucky roots, and her willingness to speak her mind. Her memory will live on through the many generations of family she leaves behind.

Graveside services for Helen Poe will be held at the Shannon Cemetery at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, October 27, 2026. Arrangements are entrusted to the Knox and Brothers Funeral Home. Condolences at knoxbrothersfuneralhome.com
