Mattie Breckenridge Steward, 82, of Maysville, Kentucky, passed away on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, at Saint Joseph Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky. Mrs. Steward was the widow of James Franklin "P-nut" Steward, who passed away in 2021. Mattie retired from Bridgeway Enterprise, and she was a member of Scott United Methodist Church. She was born in Maysville, Kentucky, on July 20, 1943, the daughter of the late Garnold and Florence Commodore Breckenridge.
Mattie was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother whose family meant everything to her. She adored her four sons and took immense pride in her grandchildren and great grandchildren, never missing an opportunity to share her love, laughter, and guidance. The annual July visits to celebrate her birthday became a treasured family tradition that she looked forward to with great anticipation each year and held close to her heart. Mattie was truly one of a kind and will be remembered for her quick wit, warm humor, gentle sweetness, and unmistakable sass. Her presence could light up a room, and her love left a lasting impression on everyone she encountered.
In her younger years, Mattie worked as a substitute teacher at Jones Elementary School, where she enjoyed supporting students while raising her family. As the years passed, she found joy in life's simple pleasures, including visiting yard sales and flea markets. She also enjoyed watching QVC, a simple pleasure that brought her comfort and joy.
Survivors include her four sons, Shawnee Commodore, Lanceson Commodore, Sr, Darrin Commodore (Crystal), and Adam Commodore (Kellie); fourteen grandchildren, Brooke Commodore, Cameron Jones Commodore, Adam Clayton Commodore, Zackary Kirk Commodore, Shayla Henderson, Kierrah Corde, Lance Commodore, Jr., Shawn Commodore, Jr., Torrence Commodore, Cincia Commodore, Andrea Gemmill Commodore, Alexis Saunders Commodore, and Marc Saunders Commodore, Meah Rose Commodore; several great grandchildren; her five siblings, Charles Breckenridge, Linda Jones, Wanda Humphrey, Virginia Kirk, and Wilma Commodore; and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Larry Breckenridge, James "Lou Lou" Breckenridge, Bob Breckenridge, Anna Cunningham, and Mary "Easel" Thomas.
Funeral services for Mattie Steward will be held at Scott United Methodist Church at 1:00 PM on Thursday, February 12, 2026, with Pastor Claude Commodore and Rev. Terrance Taylor officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church on Thursday from 11:00 AM until the hour of the service.
