Nona Mae
Marshall
Apr 27, 1933 — Mar 25, 2023
Maysville
Mrs. Nona Mae Marshall, 89, of Maysville, passed away on March 25, 2023 from complications of dementia and congestive heart failure. A lifelong resident, she retired from Meadowview Regional Hospital and was a C.N.A and Transportation Aide, and was well known for her dedication, respect and care for patients.
She was predeceased by her mother, Ms. Hattie Mae Ward; father, Mr. Oliver N. Morton; sibling, Ms. Ruth Barbee Morton; son and daughter-in-law, Mr. & Mrs. Charles "Kitt" Bishop and Brenda Gordon Bishop; daughter, Mrs. Valda Morton Joseph; and a special cousin, Mr. Donald W. Kimbrough.
She is survived by her husband George and enjoyed 63 years of marriage. They were inseparable and had been active members of Scott United Methodist Church, baptized together, renewed marriage vows and served in the church in varied capacities over the years. From humble beginnings, the couple raised their family on Fourth St., hub of the Maysville African American community. In their older years, they often reminisced about times past – Fee School, East End, and the many elders, friends and loved ones gone. Their mutual respect for their ancestral beginnings – the struggles and triumphs – kept them firmly rooted, always in love with God, family, and community, and fully committed in hope for better tomorrows.
This hope was manifested through Mrs. Marshall's volunteerism in R.S.V.P., as a member of the Site Committee and Board of the Mason County Public Library; volunteer for the Black Caucus; member of the Mason County Homemakers; and former board member of Humphrey Park Playground. Her passion and commitment as a Charter Member of the National Underground Railroad Museum was unmatched. Her enthusiasm, knowledge and drive to develop an accessible history about the men and women who fought for equity, freedom, and justice for the enslaved African and their descendants – offered Mrs. Marshall an opportunity to preserve the history in Maysville she held so dear, while inspiring youth and adults, meeting visitors, making friends from all over the globe and traveling to historic sites in the U.S. and Canada.
Mrs. Marshall enjoyed cooking, the holidays and family celebrations. She is survived by sons, Glenn (Billy Rose) Bishop, Curtis Bishop, and daughters, Mary (Mark) Hester, Crystal Marshall and son in law Paul (Valda) Joseph; grandchildren, Alicia Hammond, Amber Bishop, Aimee Bishop, Kirk Alan Bishop, Christina Joseph, Phillip Joseph, Carrie Hester; great grandchildren, Hyacinth, Caleb, Cameron and Kelsey Hammond and Kegan Myrick; Carson Palmer, Easton Vasquez, Khalia Blythe, and brothers and sisters in law, and several nephews and nieces.
Funeral services for Nona Marshall will be held at Scott United Methodist Church, Friday, March 31, 2023 at 1:00 PM with Rev. Claude Commodore officiating. Visitation will be held at the church on Friday from 11 AM until the hour of service. Burial will follow in the Green Acres Cemetery. Memorial donations may be considered in Mrs. Marshall's memory to Scott United Methodist Church or the National Underground Railroad Museum. Arrangements are entrusted to the Knox and Brothers Funeral Home. Condolences at knoxbrothersfuneralhome.com
