Patricia Bray Hinton
Patricia B. (Mitchell) Hinton, the one who made you feel special, a/k/a Patty, Cow Patty, Mamoo, Granny Pat, and "Poopsie" in the Maysville Players 1965 show 'The Pajama Game'. "I may have made some bad choices concerning my health, but I had a fun life." "Hand me a cigarette and pour me a jack and coke in a tall glass." She arrived ready to party July 4th, 1940.
Growing up in the 40's and 50's, Pat loved to play games, including playing Duplicate Bridge at the Maysville Bridge Club, dancing at sock hops and doing the jitterbug. Patty was the daughter of the late Ora Beatrice Pyles Peniston & Herman McManis of Carroll County; and David Bray of Shelby County.
The 84.4 years that followed proved to be a grand, musical, sometimes tragic, but always full of love and acceptance. She always made people feel enriched and better for knowing her. She grew up in the small town of Carrolton, Kentucky with her beloved grandmother, Carrie "Mom" Pyles, her mother, Ora Beatrice Pyles Peniston, Aunt Laura Pyles Rodgers and her little sister, Connie Bray Batts. However, she bolted after high school to Richmond, KY and the Eastern KY University campus where she attended on a music scholarship playing the "licorice stick" or clarinet. Patty B loved music, including the piano. EKU is also where she met and fell in love with Wayne Karam Mitchell from Maysville.
Married in 1959, they successfully produced four wonderfully unique children – Greg E Mitchell (MHS Class '78) (Mechelle Cropper), Kimberly B Mitchell (MCHS Class '79), Gary Mac Mitchell (SPHS Class '86) and Kara C Mitchell (MCHS Class '88). Well life, a fire, and death could not keep Patricia down. She survived to find her beloved Judge Richard L "Dickie" Hinton of Flemingsburg. Meeting in 1978, together they blended a family of 4 and 3, including David Hinton, Kathryn (Marty) Voiers, & Richard McGregor "Greg" Hinton.
Continuing her zest for life, she and Richard "Pops" enjoyed some things together (the courtroom and traveling) and some things apart (Greg's Maysville Bulldog football games, Kim and Kara's court reporter / stenographer days, Gary's St. Patrick's basketball games). Patricia worked most of her life, retiring after serving as the last official court reporter for the 19th Circuit Judicial Court Kentucky Administrative Office of the Courts.
When it all mattered, the family blend provided for the seven combined children, 17 grandchildren (Elizabeth Hinton, Amy Hinton, Christopher Hinton, Kathryn Rene Adams, Martin L Voiers III, Beth Hinton Murphy, Sarah Hinton, Bryan Richard Habermehl, Amanda Habermehl, Mark Clay Habermehl, Jacob Patrick Mitchell, Zachariah Joseph Mitchell, Noah Michael Mitchell, Elijah Karam Mitchell, Mackenzie Frazier Bennett, Alexandra Daab Mitchell, Sophia Mitchell), and 23 great-grandchildren (Danielle Adams, Kya Rowlands, Sofia Rowlands, Trey Hogan, Charlie Hogan, Ronan Hinton, Leo Hinton, Colin Murphy, Lexi Cord, Ivy Fearin, Liza Logston, Caleb Voiers, Maggie Voiers, Savannah Habermehl, Maverick Habermehl, Samantha Habermehl, Alex Habermehl, Maximus Habermehl, Hayden Habermehl, Harper Habermehl, Isabella/Mariah Mitchell, and Aurora Beth Bennett).
Mom leaves behind a loving family, wonderful friends, an appreciation for Musicals, Broadway, Duplicate Bridge, movies, games, dance, music and so much more. It is not how she died which matters, but how she lived. And Oh! How She Did Live!!
Send flowers as Patricia loved flowers, especially roses, having Richard L literally build her a rose garden. Donate to your favorite cause or consider giving to the theatre (Maysville Players), a school (St. Patrick's in Maysville), a church (Millcreek Christian Church in Mayslick), or the Mitchell Cornerstone Foundation with Raymond James. If nothing else, please light a candle (or cigarette Foundation if you prefer), say a prayer, and remember Patricia Bray Mitchell Hinton.
Patricia will be laid to rest on Saturday, November 30th at a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Patrick's Church in Maysville, Kentucky, Fr. Augustine Aidoo and Pastor Martin L Voiers II, officiants. Friends are invited to visit 9:30 to 10:45 and stay for blessings at 11 AM. Following this a graveside service at the Maysville Cemetery in Maysville, Kentucky will be conducted. After which Patricia's family invite friends to celebrate her life by lifting our glasses at Caproni's On the River in Maysville, KY around 1:30.
