Maysville – James Roy McCormick, 81, of Aberdeen, Ohio passed away on Thursday, January 11, 2024 at the Ohio Valley Manor in Ripley. Mr. McCormick was the widower of Ellie Swisshelm McCormick who passed in 1998.
Roy retired from the DP&L Killen Station. He was a member of the Aberdeen Baptist Church, the Maysville Moose Lodge, had served in the US Army Reserves for six years, had also served as a trustee for Huntington Township for sixteen years, was a basketball referee, a knothole baseball coach, a girls' softball coach, and an avid bowler at Town and Country Bowling Lanes. Roy loved golfing and spending time with friends and family. He was an avid University of Tennessee fan, and Ohio State and Cincinnati Bengals fan. You would find him on Sundays watching the game with his University of Tennessee Throw wrapped around himself.
James Roy McCormick was born in Cookeville, Tennessee on December 5th, 1942, the ninth child of the late Willie and Pearl Mae Burnett McCormick. He is survived by his step-daughter and her husband, Vicki and William Asbury of Aberdeen, Ohio; four granddaughters Kelly Asbury of Cold Spring, Kentucky, Carissa Dale Ray and her husband Chris of Cincinnati, Ohio, Katherine Padgett and her husband Ahren of Louisville, Kentucky, and Morgan Merrill and her husband Tim of Oregon, Wisconsin. Roy is survived by three great-grandchildren, Nathan Asbury, Reilly Jane Ray and Violet Ray. Roy is also survived by his brother Randall McCormick and his wife Shirley in Cookeville, Tennessee. He is also survived by his nieces, Patty Shoemaker (Wes) of Independence, Kentucky and Carla McDowell (David) of Germantown, Kentucky and Belinda Fay of Maysville, Kentucky. Roy loved all his family - he had many sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law and nieces and nephews from the Tennessee, Georgia and Kentucky areas. Roy also looked forward to traveling to Cookeville, Tennessee once a year to celebrate the McCormick Annual Family Reunion.
Besides his wife and his parents, James Roy McCormick was preceded in death by his daughter, Mary Beth McCormick; his stepson, Dale L. Horner, Jr.; his siblings, George Carl McCormick, JD McCormick, Charles McCormick, Joe McCormick, Joyce McCormick, Jean Wyrick and Bessie Mae Allen.
Roy loved his close circle of friends and neighbors; Toby and Julia Bowman and the Cluxton Family for providing delicious gifts of food throughout the years and for sharing time with Pap Roy; "The Click" at the Killen Generating Station Storeroom - Linda Kirshner, Bob Ratliff, Richard Shelton, Jackie Gallenstein and Tucker Wallingford and his bowling alley buddies and friends - Larry and Sue Aldridge and the Aldridge Family, Adam Lewis and the Lewis Family, and all his companions who sat by him at Pooter's Counter at Town and Country Bowling Lanes eating their favorite foods and solving the problems of the world! Thank you Larry, Sue and Brian Aldridge and Allen Jones for taking good care of Roy while he spent time at Pooters! Thank you to Harry and Jenny Frazier for providing company and being such good friends to Roy. We are all going to miss our Pap Roy as he was one of a kind and very loved in the community.
Funeral services for Roy McCormick will be held at the Knox and Brothers Funeral Home at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, January 24th with Pastor Clark Castle officiating. Burial will follow in the Charter Oak Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, January 24th from 11:00 until the hour of the service. Pallbearers will be Larry Aldridge, Harry Frazier, Mike Harney, David McDowell, Chris Ray and Rick Seaman. Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Asbury, Nathan Asbury, Brian Aldridge, Mike Cluxton, Adam Lewis and Wesley Shoemaker.
