William "Bill" Preston, 83 of Maysville passed away peacefully June 14 surrounded by loving family. Bill was born in Mason County on January 2, 1939, the son of the late Wood and Josie Bussell Bailey. Bill was a 1957 graduate of Mayslick High School. He married his high school sweetheart Bertha McDowell soon after graduation and moved to Cincinnati where they lived for 12 years. Bill attended Cincinnati Barber College during those years and began a career in the barber industry. The family returned to Maysville in 1969 and a few years later Bill opened Preston's Barber Shop on Clark Street where he served the community for 42 years. He shared many barber shop stories with long time loyal customers.
Bill had a strong Christian faith and served in church leadership for more than 60 years. He was a founding elder of Community Bible Church in Aberdeen, Ohio serving as church treasurer for 29 years until his recent illness. Bill loved southern gospel music, especially quartet style singing. Watching Gaither music videos was a favorite pastime.
Besides his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his loving wife of 45 years Bertha, infant son Kenneth Wayne, brother Gary Bailey, sister Wanda Bradley and great-granddaughter Claire Mattingly. Bill is survived by wife Orella Preston, sons Rick Preston of Maysville, Woody Preston of Lexington, Chuck Preston of Bowling Green, Ronald (Penny) Hedges of Oneida, TN and daughter Peggy (Danny) Walls of Lancaster. Grandchildren Jessica Mattingly, Travis Preston, Jeremy Preston, Chris Preston, Grace Preston, Megan Phillips and Leslie Calmes with nine great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at the Knox and Brothers Funeral Home in Maysville on Friday June 17th from 5 to 8 pm. Funeral service will be held on Saturday June 18th at 10 am at the Washington United Methodist Church in Maysville with internment following at Washington Baptist Cemetery. Reverend Paul Cropper and Reverend Troy Jolly will officiate the service. Pallbearers are Jeremy Preston, Chris Preston, Ernie Elliott, Brian Littleton, James Bailey and Allan Dale. Honorary pallbearers are Bill Dearing, Jim Rawlings, Carrol Price, Benny McDowell, Jerry McDowell, Ron Bailey, Gerald Orme and Johnny Conley. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Bertha Preston Memorial Coat Fund at Community Bible Church, 280 Denver Drive, Aberdeen, Ohio 45101.
